(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (English):The quality of educational action is highly dependent on its range of responsiveness to specific situations. This applies especially to situations in which the educator wants to express, generally speaking, a form of rejection. Whereas critique, prohibiting, setting limits, and punishing the infringement of a law are widely recognized as suitable forms of such a negative response, intolerance is usually considered to be utterly inappropriate. The meaning of intolerance which is implied in this case is, however, due to a certain, one-sided understanding of intolerance and its opposite, namely tolerance. In contrast to this understanding, it is argued that there is a specific meaning of intolerance, i.e. reflective intolerance, which is appropriate and very useful for widening the range of educational responsiveness to difficult situations. The practical relevance of such a reflective intolerance is demonstrated on the basis of two examples, i.e. the discussion about wearing a headscarf in school and the question of how one should react to deviant behavior of children and youths.
