Abstract (English):It has lately been claimed by educational political bodies that teachers with an immigrant background have a specific potential for dealing with cultural heterogeneity in their teaching practice. An overview of the current state of research shows a variety of indications for a specific potential, but hardly any solid empirical evidence. Grounded in a critical appraisal of the findings, the authors point to the fact that political ascriptions of a specific potential as well as scientific examinations of such an ascribed potential run the risk of supporting an essentialist understanding of «culture» and thus of contributing to the construction of difference. In contrast, the authors suggest developing research approaches more decidedly based on a constructivist understanding of «culture», and asking, for instance, to what extent and in what ways an immigrant background contributes to the development of intercultural competence, and how teacher education can support such a development.
